Brian Witkin & Kamaka Mullen

Aloha!

Original and Traditional Hawaiian Music

Slack Key 'Ohana is a California-based Hawaiian band performing harmony-rich original songs in the Hawaiian style, along with its own interpretations of traditional Hawaiian classics. Formed in 2021 as a duo consisting of lifelong musician Brian Witkin and Hawaiian recording artist Kamaka Mullen, their first EP featuring pedal steel player Rand Anderson won 2022 San Diego Music Award’s “Best World Music Album”.

Brian’s parents watched; his dad, Joe Witkin, was a former member of many bands, including Sha Na Na when they performed at Woodstock in 1969. His musician mom, Carol Witkin, was immersing herself in her ukulele music during the COVID pandemic. They joined in late 2021, wonderfully ironic, as “Ohana” means “family” in Hawaiian.

Instrumentation includes two guitars, ukulele, bass, lap steel & pedal steel. Brian’s brother Sean Witkin– more ‘Ohana! – joins the band on drums on occasion, as do sister Hula dancers Alana & Alyssa Godoy.

Described as “One of the hottest bands in San Diego!” (Bart Mendoza / SD News), the band saw over 100 shows in 2023 and has appeared at prime island and slack key festivals, including PIFA (Pacific Islander Festival), Tiki Oasis, Tiki Caliente, and Alohana. All three album releases have topped the iTunes World Music charts, and their latest studio album “Hawaiian Cowboy” features prominent guest musicians Brittni Paiva, George Kahumoku Jr, & Billy F Gibbons of ZZ Top. The band is signed to Pacific Records and endorsed by KALA and Romero Creations.
