In an era of digital shortcuts, manufactured collaborations, and increasingly disconnected music-making, award-winning family trio Slack Key ʻOhana is embracing something far more enduring: family, tradition, and genuine human connection. On their forthcoming album, The ʻOhana Sessions, the Southern California-based group delivers their most personal project to date, stripping their celebrated island-inspired sound down to its foundation and placing the spotlight squarely on the three people who started it all: son Brian Witkin, mother Carol Witkin, and father Joe Witkin. The result is a warm, harmony-rich collection that captures the spirit of Hawaiʻi while celebrating the deeper meaning of ʻohana: family, belonging, and community. "There's a unique energy when it's just the three of us," says Brian Witkin. "This album is the first time we've made a full studio record centered entirely on the trio, and that was very intentional. It brings out a different emotional depth in both the performances and the songs themselves." Since forming in 2021, Slack Key ʻOhana has become one of the most celebrated emerging acts in contemporary island music, earning two World Entertainment Awards, two San Diego Music Awards, and multiple Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award nominations, Hawaiʻi's highest musical honor. Their recordings have featured an impressive roster of collaborators, including three-time GRAMMY® winner and slack key guitar master George Kahumoku Jr., GRAMMY® nominee Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, award-winning ukulele virtuoso Brittni Paiva, and Hawaiʻi-based lap steel guitarist Rand Anderson. But while guest musicians have helped define previous releases, The ʻOhana Sessions intentionally turns inward. Built around the trio's signature three-part vocal harmonies, the album presents Slack Key ʻOhana in its purest form. Recorded using vintage and analog equipment, the project rejects samples, excessive editing, and artificial production techniques in favor of capturing real performances and real emotion. "We continue to stay true to our recording philosophy," Witkin explains. "We track together in real time. That human element has always been essential to our sound." That authenticity has become a defining characteristic of the band's rise. Their 2021 self-titled debut entered the iTunes World Music chart at No. 2 and went on to win Best World Music Album at the San Diego Music Awards. Their live recording, Live at Tiki Oasis, debuted at No. 1 on the iTunes World Music chart in 2022, while 2024's Hawaiian Cowboy also reached No. 1 and earned nominations for Island Music of the Year at the Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards and Album of the Year at the San Diego Music Awards. Earlier this year, the band's single "Slack Key Blues" further expanded that momentum, earning two World Entertainment Awards, including Best Global Traditional Song and Best Tropical Song. Yet despite the accolades, chart success, and growing national profile, the heart of Slack Key ʻOhana remains remarkably simple. At its core, the band is still a son making music with his parents. That family bond carries particular significance given Joe Witkin's own place in music history as a founding member of the legendary rock-and-roll group Sha Na Na, who famously performed at the original Woodstock festival. Decades later, three generations of musical experience now converge within Slack Key ʻOhana's distinctive blend of Hawaiian slack key guitar, ukulele, rich vocal harmonies, blues influences, and island storytelling. "Playing together is incredibly special," says Witkin. "There's a built-in musical chemistry that you simply can't manufacture. At the same time, it's still family, so of course there are moments. But that's part of what makes it real. Getting to create, record, and perform with my parents is something I don't take for granted." That sense of authenticity extends beyond the studio and onto the stage, where Slack Key ʻOhana has built a devoted following through more than one hundred live performances annually across the mainland United States and Hawaiʻi. Their concerts have become immersive cultural celebrations, often featuring surprise guest musicians, hula dancers, and fire performers. No two performances are exactly alike, but each reflects the band's mission of creating joy, connection, and community. "Our goal has always been to create music that people can live in," says Witkin. "Whether someone connects with the musicianship or simply wants to have a good time, we want them to feel transported somewhere warm, peaceful, and connected."
